Vidarbha won the Ranji Trophy 2024-25 title. The team played a draw match with Kerala, but became the champion with the lead in the first innings.
BCCI has changed the format of Ranji Trophy. From the next season, one teams will be promoted and reelgved in this tournament. These changes will be applicable in all BCCI’s edge group tournaments. The decision was taken at the Apex Council meeting on Saturday.
BCCI said in a statement that a team will be promoted from 2026-27 season in all multi-day men’s tournaments (Senior and Junior). While a team will be relahmed. Till now, after every season of Ranji, 2 teams were promoted from plate to the elite group. Whereas, 2 teams living at the bottom place were also relaxed from the elite to plate group.
The 2025-26 season of Ranji Trophy will be held in two rounds from 15 October to 28 February. The first phase of the Ranji Trophy will be played from 15 October to 19 November. While the second phase will run from 22 January to 1 February. The knockouts will be played from 6 to 28 February.

What else changed in domestic cricket?
- The Dalip Trophy has returned to the zonal format. This will be the first tournament of this season. It will be held from August 28 to September 15. The Iranian Cup will be played from October 1 to 5. The board said- ‘The team will be selected by the Regional Selection Committee.’
- The plate division has been re-included in all ODI tournaments including Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy T20 tournament. Till now, teams used to play quarter -finals, semi -finals and final matches at the knockout phase, but this season the top teams will get three more matches in the Super League. The top teams of Group A and B will play the finals. Bottom-6 teams will join the plate group. Samt will be played from 26 November to 18 December.
- In all the tournament of BCCI’s white ball, the team that moved forward in the league round will be decided at the net run rate. This rule is already applicable in international cricket. It is also included in domestic.
Why did the format change? BCCI included 9 new teams in the Ranji Trophy in 2018-19, including the North East team. This affected the quality of cricket in the Ranji Trophy. Meghalaya played in Elite Division last season, but suffered defeat in all matches.
