New Delhi. South Africa celebrated fiercely after a historic victory at the World Test Championship (WTC 2025). Team captain Temba Bawuma was not ready to keep the mace on the ground after the victory, so the Player of the Match Aiden Markram celebrated something that went into the eyes of the people. Markram went to the gallery in the celebration of victory and started drinking beer from a person himself. The video of this incident is viral. Questions are being raised whether the cricketer’s drinking beer during the match is a violation of ICC rules and can Markram be punished for this?
What do ICC rules say
ICC rules are not very clear about alcohol. The players are forbidden to get intoxicated during the match. The ICC’s code of conduct expects to follow the spirit of professional behavior and sports from the players. Any conduct that is against the spirit of sports or affects performance, such as consumption of alcohol, can become the basis of disciplinary action. ICC’s anti-doping policy says that players should be physically and mentally fit during the match. But there is a bag here. Alcohol is kept in select sports in the restricted list of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). Like racing. This is not the case for cricket. But during testing, you can punish the National Cricket Board or Team Management player if found in drug addiction.
The rules of ICC for alcohol change in the country. There is a ban on selling or drinking at the stadium in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh. There is no such ban in New Zealand, England, South Africa. The audience has the freedom to drink beer within the prescribed limit, but the players have no such discount. If the player is found to be drinking alcohol in the field, dugout or dressing room during the match, then the match referee can warning him or punishment of fine or suspension.
Markram is not in danger of punishment
The match was over when Eden Markram drank beer from his friend. Therefore, it will not be considered a violation of ICC rules.
