New Delhi. After Virat Kohli retired from Test cricket, now the question is arising as to who will play his place at number 4 in the Indian cricket team. This batting order is considered to be the most important in any team. The number four reserve has been informally for the best batsman of the team for almost three decades. Great batsmen like Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli played a great innings for the team in this place for a long time. Anil Kumble has said to give Karun Nair a chance at this place on the tour of England.

Kumble told ESPNcricinfo, “I don’t think anyone thought who would bat at number 4. Rohit did not play the first Test in Australia, so there was a change in the batting order. Once Rahul performed well, Rohit batted below and then he took himself out of the final Test. He knows who is the backup opener for India, but I don’t think that I think about the number 4.”

The former head coach said, “The way Karun has scored in domestic cricket, he has the right to return to the Indian team. Perhaps he can be number 4 for India because I think you need a little experience. You need a person in England who has played there and knows the circumstances.”

Kumble further said, “He has played county cricket, so he knows the circumstances of England. Karun can cross 30 but he is still young. If he gets a chance, he will increase the hope of playing first class cricket for the youth. If the performance in domestic cricket does not recognize it, it becomes a challenge.”

Prior to Tendulkar, India had batsmen playing at number 4 for a long time like GR Vishwanath and Dilip Vengsarkar. When Tendulkar retired in 2013, Kohli got this place. Sachin scored 15921 runs in the Test which included 51 centuries. Virat Kohli said goodbye to the Test by scoring 9230 runs with 30 centuries. Now that they have retired, who is the next to carry forward the legacy of number 4 for India?

Karun Nair may not be able to get close to Tendulkar and Kohli’s Test figures as they do not have so much time at the age of 33, but the kind of form they have shown in the last domestic season, they can do a good job for the next two World Test Championships (WTC) Circle. Kumble believes that Nair’s red-ball experience in cricket and his exposure in county cricket will work now. Especially when India will not have Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli for the Test series against England starting on 20 June.

Karun Nair scored 779 runs in 9 matches in the Vijay Hazare Trophy which included five centuries. He also continued his rhythm in red-ball cricket, where he scored 860 runs at an average of 57.33, including four centuries, including Vidarbha’s title winning innings of 135 and 85.
